The Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, (STU), the largest and most significant university of technology in the Slovak Republic, is a modern European educational and research institution. It offers university education mainly in technical, technological, technical-economic, technical-information and technical-artistic fields of study. Its activities reach back to the rich old tradition of the Mining Academy in Banská Štiavnica, the first technical higher education institution in the world, established by the Empress Maria Theresa in 1762. Since its establishment in 1937, more than 147,000 graduates have completed their education at the university, with the average number of students attending annually being 16 000.

The STU is considered to be one of the leading academic institutions in Slovakia and Europe, and has received numerous high rankings and awards for its quality of research and teaching. The STU has been an ECTS label holder since 2012 and DS Label since 2013.

In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, it is listed in 601.-800. place. In the 2016 QS World University Rankings it ranks overall 401-500 and 79 in Emerging Europe and Central Asia. According to the Slovak higher education ranking scheme prepared by ARRA, STU is the best university in chemical technologies, computer and technical sciences. Education at STU is based on its own scientific research and focused on industry needs. In 2015 STU’s researchers participated in 294 research contracts with industry partners and in almost 500 research projects funded through grants. STU graduates are some of the most successful and the highest paid employees on the Slovak job market.

The STU provides a comprehensive and modern system of university education, research, and cooperation with the world of work through the transfer of knowledge. The STU faculties, departments, institutes and experts cooperate directly with industrial companies and social organisations, actively taking part in international cooperation.

The University offers study within accredited study programmes leading to Bachelor’s, Engineer’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees. The credit system is compatible with the ECTS, enabling the bilateral student mobility in EU countries’ universities, as well as within the framework of the broader European and world-wide area.

An important part of STU policy is internationalisation strategy. University cooperates with more than 240 partnership universities and institutions from around the world with the aim to intensify international cooperation with long-term partners abroad, to establish new partnerships with the aim to develop the educational and scientific research activities in the European and global context. Focuses on solution of the joint projects within the EU framework and other international programmes, mobility of students, teaching staff and researchers, cooperation based on international agreements, membership in international organisations, participation, organisation and realisation of international conferences, seminars, workshops etc.

Today, one of the main tasks of the STU is also the active policy in the area of foreign students’ recruitment. The STU offers education in foreign languages, primarily in the following areas: civil engineering and mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, informatics, chemistry and food technology, architecture.

The STU creates for the students high-quality conditions for the study and for active use of free time.
