With science, technology, and social structures advancing rapidly, the world needs more qualified individuals who possess the knowledge and skills required to pursue a career anywhere in the world. Aware of this pressing issue, in 1994 the Sabanci Group of Turkey decided to establish a "world university" led by the Sabanci Foundation. Sabanci University is a non-profit institution located in Istanbul, Turkey. Its first students matriculated in 1999. The first academic session started on October 20, 1999. Since 1999, Sabanci University itself has set an example for many universities.Undergraduate and graduate programs at Sabanci University differ in their design and approach from those programs of other universities. The principles that form the foundation of our academic programs and institutional structure are based on an interdisciplinary approach with the absence of traditional departments.At SU, academic activities are performed within the framework of three faculties composed of non-departmental and interdisciplinary programs: the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and the School of Management.Sabanci University is an ambitious and proud institution, with a high level of awareness of its uniqueness and commitment towards an interdisciplinary view of higher education, and the will to “make a difference” and bring change to the Turkish higher education landscape.With these universal principles in mind, the Board of Trustees, faculty and administration of Sabanci University jointly take responsibility for assuring fullest protection of freedom of inquiry, thought, and expression. Sabanci University's commitment to academic freedom finds expression as follows: All members of the University community involved in the practice of dissemination of knowledge are entitled to freedom in the conduct of their teaching in the classroom, of their research on or off campus, and in the publication, discussion and interpretation of research results.Sabanci University positions itself to be one of the most innovative and research-oriented universities in Turkey. As part of its philosophy, the University aims to direct its research efforts primarily towards applied and strategic research with the objectives of advancing knowledge, supporting teaching and contributing to the progress of the community. The research activities at the university aim to enrich educational programs while contributing to social and economic development.At Sabanci University, all research efforts are conducted on an interdisciplinary basis. Sabanci University also hosts Sabanci University Nanotechnology Research and Application Center (SUNUM), the Istanbul Policy Center (IPC) and the Istanbul International Center for Energy and Climate (IICEC), as well as several and research for a, namely the Competitiveness Forum (REF), the Corporate Governance Forum of Turkey (CGFT) and the Gender and Women’s Studies Forum. Research activities and innovation initiatives are assisted by Research and Graduate Policies Directorate (RGP).As a young university, Sabanci University aims to become an international reference point for innovation in education and research.
