Ningxia University

Founded in 1958, Ningxia University is situated in the historically and culturally-rich city of Yinchuan, the capital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, an oasis town bordering the Yellow River along the desert frontier. Since 2004 the university has been the only comprehensive university run by both the Ministry of Education and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. In 2008, the Chinese government made Ningxia University part of the “211 Project”, an agenda for promoting higher education with the aim to build 100 influential universities in the 21st Century. And from 2012, Ningxia University has been an active participant in the “One Province One University” National Plan, striving to establish itself as an outstanding comprehensive university in Ningxia.

The university now consists of five main campuses, with a campus area of 2383 acres and 1695 acres of experimental farms. The whole building area is 690,000 square meters, and the fixed assets are 12.5 billion Yuan. Among its more than 2668 staff, about 1580 are full-time teachers.

There are more than 22,000 students in total, among which 3090 are graduates, and 15195undergraduates. Minorities account for 38.1% of the undergraduate students. There are 2865 minority students, 394 international students, and 14614 adult education students. Besides 70 Bachelors’ degree programs, currently there are 26 first-level Masters’ degree programs, 152 second-level Masters’ degree programs, 5 Masters’ degree authorization centers, 5 first-level PhD programs, 23 second-level PhD programs, and two postdoctoral research stations. The library has 1.42 million books, and the value of teaching and research equipment is 171 million Yuan. Established in 1995, the China Education and Research Network (CERNET) is the master node of the northwest region of Ningxia.

There is one key national program, one key national cultivating program, 17 key provincial programs. Up to now, much work has been done to construct some key laboratory and research centers. These include: 1) the Key Laboratory of Energy and Chemical Engineering, 2) the Key Laboratory of Ecological Restoration for Northwest Land Degradation, which is a breeding base supported by both Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and the Ministry of Education, 3) the Laboratory of the Recycling for the Coal-based Chemical Industry in Ningdong (a national-provincial joint engineering laboratory), 4) the Key Laboratory of Protection and Utilization of Northwestern Typical Biological Resources, with the help of the Ministry of Education, 5) the Engineering Research Center of Grapes and Wine, 6) the Research Center for Modern Agriculture and Water Resources of Arid Areas (an engineering research center of the Ministry of Education), and 7) the Institute of Xixia Studies (base for Humanities and Social Science of Ministry of Education).

In addition, there are 4 academic journals published by Ningxia University. The natural science edition of the Journal of Ningxia University is a national key journal and its humanities and social sciences edition is a source journal of . By adhering to the principle of running a school openly, Ningxia University, on the basis of having established Ministry of Education “counterpart support” cooperation with Shanghai Jiaotong University, has in succession set up a stable cooperative relationship with Shandong University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University of Science and Technology, Jilin University, Nanjing Normal University, Nanchang University, Fuzhou University, Shanghai Normal University, shaping a cooperative pattern of “one to nine”. Since 1992, universities from more than 20 countries have established exchanges and cooperative relationship with Ningxia University. With the support of Dubai University of United Arab Emirates, in 2010, a first Confucius Institute was set up in Arabian Gulf by Ningxia University.

Ningxia University adheres to the opening direction of running a university, and in which the foreign exchange and cooperation is regarded as an important link to the innovation of mechanism our university’s system, to the improvement of the quality and service of the Inland Open Economics Experimental Area of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, and to the construction development of the Yinchuan Comprehensive Bonded Zone. Overseas The first group of international students were first recruited in 1992 by our university. In 2005, the Sino-Japanese International Joint Research Institute was founded. In 2006, the School of International Education was established. In 2009, the university became a unit member of the international scholarship program recognized by the Ministry of Education. The first Confucius Institute of in the Gulf countries was founded in 2011 with cooperation between the two sides. 2012 is was a new start for both the Arabia Research Center of sponsored by the Ministry of Education (The Cultivation Base of for Nationality and Regional Research of sponsored by the Ministry of Education) and the Collaborative Innovation Center of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region (projects of 2011).

In order to promote the development, Ningxia University has established strong relationships with more than nine universities which were the are members of the "985 University" project; these include a comprehensive university, universities of engineering, agriculture, education, and local comprehensive universities. Thus the formation of the "One to Nine" cooperation pattern was founded. In our province, we have also gone into a kind of entered into what can be termed a “one to two” partnership with Ningxia Teachers College and Yinchuan College of Energy.
