Our Schools:

Parsons School of Design

Parsons School of Design has offered students innovative approaches to education since its founding in 1896. Today we’re the only American art and design school within a comprehensive university, The New School, which also houses a rigorous liberal arts college and a progressive performing arts school. Our undergraduate and graduate programs, offered through Parsons’ five schools, immerse students in focused training, interdisciplinary inquiry, and practice-based collaborative learning. Here creators and scholars master established art and design fields and advance emerging ones while studying a range of university disciplines.

Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts

A top liberal arts college, a home for progressive intellectual thought, and part of a leading university, Lang offers students a unique learning experience in New York City. The city’s vast intellectual resources are fully integrated into Lang’s curriculum through liberal arts courses built around socially relevant questions, seminars co-taught by community partners, in-depth internships, and service learning programs. Life in the city feeds a limitless range of interests, and Lang provides numerous ways to study liberal arts in conjunction with the city’s art, culture, music, and political events.

College of Performing Arts

At the College of Performing Arts, our renowned schools of drama, jazz, and classical music come together to form a progressive creative center at the heart of The New School. Here performing arts students work across disciplines to become a force of new artistry.

Established in the fall of 2015, The New School’s College of Performing Arts brings together Mannes School of Music, the iconic 100-year-old conservatory; the legendary School of Jazz and Contemporary Music; and the innovative and groundbreaking School of Drama.

The College of Performing Arts creates opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration, innovative education, and world-class performances. A new Arts Management and Entrepreneurship MA draws on the cross-disciplinary culture of the school.

The New School for Social Research

The New School for Social Research (NSSR) is a graduate institution in the heart of New York City. It generates progressive scholarship and historically grounded education in the social sciences and philosophy. With more than 75 full-time faculty members, its ten departments and programs offer masters and doctoral degrees to 800 graduate students from 70 countries. Interdisciplinary centers and institutes housed at The New School for Social Research provide further opportunities for deep inquiry and innovative collaborations, particularly at the intersection of social theory, policy, and design.

Schools of Public Engagement

The Schools of Public Engagement embody the values that motivated the university's founders in 1919. Their mission is to create and nurture a learning community marked by interdisciplinary engagement with real-world issues and the integration of professional, civic, and liberal learning. The common thread that runs across our diverse academic programs is a commitment to learning that makes a difference in the world. In order to realize this commitment, we aspire to provide an educational experience that is integrative, boundary-crossing, and collaborative. We connect theory to real-world practice, training students to address civic life, to create new forms of culture, and to respond to contemporary challenges in their communities and around the world.
