The University of Warsaw (UW), established in 1816, is Poland's biggest and best public university, playing a major role in the intellectual, political and cultural life of the country and recognized throughout the world as a leading academic centre in Central-Eastern Europe.The basis of the University’s activity is the unity of teaching and research, and the harmonious development of all branches of knowledge represented in its curriculum. The University’s civic mission is the formation of elites through providing its students with high professional qualifications and preparing them for proper fulfilment of future public roles by shaping their attitudes and developing their personalities. The cultural mission of the University is a synthesis of universal and local values. This aim is achieved by combining the universal techniques of communication and knowledge with maintenance of respect for the historical and cultural identity of the region and the state. The University is a place of a diversity of scientific research, the output of which is propagated throughout the society regionally, nationally and worldwide.UW comprises 21 faculties as well as over 30 independent academic and research units. It offers over 100 study programmes in the Humanities, Social, Natural, Physical and Computer Sciences (1st, 2nd and long cycle studies), among these 27 degree programmes taught in English and 22 double degree programmes run by UW and international partners. UW offers programmes of doctoral studies in 4 Doctoral Schools (each doctoral student has an opportunity to follow a complete learning pathway in English) and 3 MBA programmes, as well as vocational training, E-learning and Summer Education, which makes the University of Warsaw indisputable leader in internationalization process among all universities in Poland. Approximately 45 000 students, including BA, MA, doctoral students and post-diploma learners are currently studying at UW. The faculty consists of c. 3800 academic staff, of which almost 90% possess at least a PhD diploma, supported by almost the same number of non-academic (research, technical and administrative) staff.The international reputation of the University of Warsaw is also attested by its active international cooperation with over 1000 foreign and national institutions, including partnerships within Erasmus+ and Erasmus Mundus agreements. The University collaborates with 680 partners from over 100 countries within direct cooperation agreements. The University is a member of over c. 100 international associations and networks, comprising the most renowned research institutions in Poland and abroad. Every year our staff are engaged in c. 1500 research projects, also subsidized from the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme, representing a wide scope of interests – from archaeological excavations, through developing new diagnostic and therapeutic methods to constructing innovative equipment, performing an advanced analysis of social and cultural changes or analytical space observations. Our scientists conduct research in Poland and abroad and every year they organize or participate in ca. 400 conferences, 60% of which are organized (or attended) by international academic community.
