The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s leading tertiary institution and largest university. It spans six campuses, has the largest university library complex in New Zealand and is the only New Zealand university that has both Engineering and Medical and Health Science faculties. This has enabled pioneering collaborations between medical and engineering researchers and resulted in the creation of the flagship Bioengineering Institute, internationally recognised for its sophisticated computer modelling of living organisms.

The University has a wide network of international affiliations and formal agreements with 174 universities in 40 countries. Staff are appointed from many countries and we attract high quality undergraduate and postgraduate international students to study here from over 100 countries around the world. We are the only New Zealand member of Universitas 21, the Association of Pacific Rim Universities and Worldwide Universities Network. Through these networks there are many opportunities for staff and students to participate in international exchanges and attend international conferences.

The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s largest research organisation with more than 13,000 staff and postgraduate students involved in fundamental and applied research. It generates around $250 million in annual research revenue. The University of Auckland also has 35% of the A-rated staff in the country in the national Performance Based Research Fund (PBRF) review of tertiary institutions, 33% of the PBRF funding allocation for research degree completions and 36% of PBRF allocations for external research income.

Our research programmes range across all disciplines: from our Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre, which is a world leader in cancer drug development, to Education, where researchers are working towards increasing learning success in clusters of low achieving primary and secondary schools. We have a strong reputation for research in Life Sciences, Medicine, Social Sciences and Management, and are international research leaders in inductive (wireless) power transfer, computational physiology, and fetal and child health development.

Centres of Research Excellence

As well as having almost 50 research units, centres and institutes at departmental, faculty and University level, we host or co-host five national Centres of Research Excellence (CoREs) established by the Government to drive innovative, international research. These are:

Maurice Wilkins Centre for Molecular Biodiscovery, which targets major disease groups –cancer, diabetes and infectious disease – affecting New Zealanders by discovering new therapies and diagnostics.

The Medical Technologies CoRE, which applies bioengineering technologies to healthcare, producing new knowledge of physiological processes in health and disease, develops novel bio-instrumentation and computational physiological models, and designs innovative medical devices and technologies to improve healthcare and to create economic opportunities for New Zealand companies.

Te Pūnaha Matatini - The Centre for Complex Systems and Network, which brings together New Zealand’s leading researchers in physics, economics, mathematics, biology, computer science, operations management, statistics, and social science to study complex systems and networks in the biosphere, the economy, and the marketplace.

Brain Research New Zealand – Rangahau Roro Aotearoa, which unlocks the secrets of the ageing brain and develops new therapies and better clinical and community care to enhance brain health throughout life for all New Zealanders.

Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga, New Zealand's Indigenous Centre of Research Excellence, which conducts research of relevance to Māori communities and is an important vehicle by which New Zealand continues to be a key player in global indigenour research and affairs.

In addition, the University of Auckland also contributes to four further CoREs, the MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology; the Dodd-Walls Centre for Photonic and Quantum Technologies; QuakeCore: Centre for Earthquake Resilience; and Riddet Institute.

Commercialising research

Auckland UniServices Limited is the University's commercial research and knowledge transfer company, where ideas are brought to life. It is the largest company of its kind in Australasia bringing income and new employment opportunities into the University and New Zealand. The team works alongside world-class academics to identify, protect and develop discoveries with commercial potential, find business partners and commercialise IP that will make a difference to people's lives. For nearly 30 years, UniServices has collaborated with hundreds of organisations on thousands of projects in New Zealand and around the world; they are currently working on 1,200 projects with more than 300 firms.

UniServices has an extensive portfolio of new technologies available for commercial licensing, and spin out companies for investment. In 2016, UniServices generated revenues of $114 million, over 50 licences for intellectual property and created more than 11 businesses to commercialise University research.

Entrepreneurial ecosystem

The University’s Business School has established an entrepreneurial ecosystem to foster young entrepreneurs to create start-up companies. It features two key competitions: Spark - an annual student led entrepreneurial challenge with categories ranging from new ideas through to fully developed products and business plans, and Chiasma - another student led initiative which encourages ideas, networking, careers and business in biotechnology.
